During the festival there are musical surprises at different locations. We have a varied program with artistic performances, a brass band, a classical concert, spoken word and rap.  

RAAR (ROTTERDAM ART AND RADIO)

RAAR (Rotterdam Art And Radio) is a streaming platform for Audio Arts, Sound Art, Debate, Discussion, Music, Performance and more related to the audible broadcast medium. During CHARLOIS SPECIAAL festival RAAR will broadcast 30 hours of sound art radio from the neighborborhood of Charlois in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Each day from 15:00-18:00 three artists, based in Rotterdam, are invited to present new audio works for up to one hour each.

Onor Davul Zurna

Locatie: Maastunnel fietstunnel Zuidzijde

If you cycle through the Maastunnel to visit Charlois Speciaal you will be welcomed by the Turkish sounds of the Davul and the Zurna. Onor and Ahmet will take you on a vacation to traditional Turkey with their Worldly sounds.

 

Koninklijke Rotterdamse Post Harmonie

Location:  Karel de Stoute plein
Date and time: Sunday June 12 13.00 – 14.30  

This year the Koninklijke Rotterdamse Post Harmonie has been playing in Rotterdam for 114 years. Based in the Bethlehemkerk in Charlois this orchestra is a must see during the art festival Charlois Speciaal. The orchestra is known for their wide-ranging repertoire of classical and modern songs. The concert they will give at Charlois Speciaal is dedicated to the reconstruction of Rotterdam after the Second World War and has the theme ‘Rotterdam viert de stad’ (Rotterdam celebrates the city). The public can enjoy the beautiful music at a special outdoors location in Charlois.

 

Talent For Music Brassband & La Diferencia Carnavals en Entertainmentgroep

Location: Start bij het O-tje naar Paviljoen aan het Water
Date and time: Saturday June 18 15:00 – 16:00

Talent for Music Brassband and La Diferencia will perform together during Charlois Speciaal and will take you on a small tour through Charlois. The percussion and woodwinds combined with a dance by the ladies from La Diferentia will create a summery ambiance you can only find at this festival. La Diferencia is known for their dazzeling performances at the ‘Zomercarnaval’ where they won third place only two years ago. Both the Brassband and dancers are located in Charlois. So follow the worldly sounds from @@ and arrive dancing at the final party at the ‘Paviljoen aan het Water’.

 

Panos Pianos Open studio

Location: Gouwstraat 50A, 3082 BE
Date and time: Thursday June 16 17.00-21.00

Panos Pianos is a private concert and exhibition space in which people are encouraged to get rid of their normal rhythm, loose a bit their sense of time and experience art in a simple and direct way. The space has been used as a stage for various performances, exhibitions and workshops (kirigami workshops, music, theater, marionette and music performances, classical music concerts, film projections etc) and it is said that there is something in its atmosphere which connects all this diverse projects and gives them a connecting line... Panos Pianos will prepare another "open studio" day for Charlois Special with a surprise diverse program.. You are all invited to come, feel like home, and find your own way to experience a sequence of performances and perhaps exhibitions!

 

Balcony Festival

Location: Garden 'Het O-tje'

Artist community O-Tje opens their garden for the public of Charlois Speciaal by throwing the Balcony Festival. Imagine yourself lying in the grass with the sun shining on your face listening to live-music played from the balconies surrounding the garden. Brazilian Fado’s, a Classical Choir, Noise Performances and a Jazz Clarinet solo: experience music played by the finest musicians Charlois has to offer. And for the foodies amongst us, no worries: the artist from O-Tje will prepare delicious homemade pizza’s baked in their own Pizza Oven.

 

Under the Radar #11

VanitaMonk (NL) electric guitar, voice.

Improvisation is not just another genre, but rather an attitude toward musical structure and human communication. The musicians tonight all share a curiosity for mind-altering encounters, but also the discipline needed to make sense of all the bits and pieces thrown at them. For the audience, the
experience can be surprisingly accessible: all you need to do is leave your expectations at the door.

 

Goslink

Goslink plays beautiful Dutch songs on special self-built instruments, such as a fruit box guitar, beech tree violin or a biscuit tin banjo.

 

Ernest van der Kwast

Location: Festival Quarantaine Speciaal Quarantaineweg 1, 3089 KP Rotterdam
Date and time: June 12 17.00 – 20.00

Writer Ernest van der Kwast debuted in 2005 with the novel Sometimes things are better when people clap, in his autobiographical novel Mama. 

 

Fluffy Shit

Location: Festival Quarantaine Speciaal Quarantaineweg 1, 3089 KP Rotterdam
Date and time: June 12 17.00 – 20.00

Fluffy Shit is a two-man band consisting of Hapsnurker and Poernaka, founded about eight years ago. After it's been quiet for a while due to circumstances, Hapsnurker and Poernaka again have to tackle the ‘fluffy magic’.

 

Lukas Simonis
