Charlois is a borough of Rotterdam South, which comprises the neighbourhoods of Carnisse; Heijplaat; Oud-Charlois; Pendrecht; Tarwewijk; Wielewaal; Zuidijk; and Zuidplein. It is a large area covering a third of the city of Rotterdam.
Charlois village was settled in 1462 and it was annexed to Rotterdam in 1895. Since the end of the 19th century Charlois has always been a magnet for migrants. They came firstly from the northern and southern provinces of the Netherlands and eventually from all parts of the globe. All the way into 1930’s neighbourhoods were being built to house blue collar workers who were employed in the fast growing shipping harbours. Charlois is now home to 65,000 people from more than 150 different countries and nationalities from around the world. It is one of the poorest areas of the nation. Because of the low standard of living, it has been an attractive area for artists to settle in since the 1980’s.
